ADF CEO Michael Farris / Commentator Henry Olsen - The Tami Jackson Show - 6/27
June 27, 2017 07:39 PM PDT
My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Michael Farris.
Michael P. Farris is president, CEO, and general counsel of Alliance Defending Freedom. In January 2017, he became only the second person to occupy that position in the organization’s 23-year history. He brings to the role a remarkably diverse background as an effective litigator, educator, public advocate, pastor, and communicator, and wide recognition for his successful work on both the national and international stage.
Farris was founding president of both the Home School Legal Defense Association (1983) and Patrick Henry College (2000) and continues to serve as chairman of the board of HSLDA and chancellor emeritus of PHC.
He graduated from Western Washington State College, magna cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, followed by a Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University (with honors). At Gonzaga, he was articles editor of the Law Review and winner of the Linden Cup Moot Court Competition. He also earned an LL.M. in Public International Law (with honors) from the University of London.
Farris has specialized in constitutional appellate litigation. In that capacity, he has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, eight federal circuit courts of appeals, and in the appellate courts of 13 states. He is also the author of numerous amicus briefs before the U.S. Supreme Court.
A fixture on Capitol Hill for over 30 years, Farris has testified many times before both the House and Senate. He was an executive committee member of the Coalition for the Free Exercise of Religion that successfully lobbied Congress for the passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993, and served as co-chairman of the drafting committee that wrote the law.
Farris also has substantial experience in international human rights advocacy. He served for nearly a decade on the board of Christian Solidarity International—a Swiss-based human rights organization. He served as International Vice President of CSI for a number of years and participated in missions to the former Soviet Union and Romania. He has also engaged in private diplomatic missions to China and the Czech Republic.
Farris is nationally known as a pioneering leader of the modern homeschooling movement. His leadership of HSLDA has taken him to nearly every state and a growing number of other nations.
As the founding president of Patrick Henry College, he helped launch a highly regarded Christian educational institution founded on a strong commitment to biblical truth and the classical liberal arts, the twin pillars of education for the founding generations of the United States. At PHC, Farris has taught constitutional law, public international law, and coached the Moot Court team to nine national championships between 2004 and 2016.
Farris is the author of over 15 books, as well as law review and other scholarly articles, and countless pieces for the popular press.
Michael and his wife, Vickie, have 10 children and 20 grandchildren.
Listen in as Michael and I discuss his substantive work in advancing legal protections for the homeschool movement and talk about the momentous victory of the Trinity Lutheran Church v. Comer SCOTUS ruling: the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in favor of ADF's client Trinity. Mike and I will talk about the repercussions of the ruling, Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, the court complexion with Justice Gorsuch, and the possibility of one or two more SCOTUS appointments during President Trumps enure.
In the second 1/2 hour I will be joined by Henry Olsen.
Henry Olsen is an elections analyst and political essayist who studies conservative politics, both here and abroad. He looks at election returns and poll data to understand why people vote the way they do and how conservative politicians and thinkers can best advance their ideas in the climate they face.
Olsen is a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Prior to that, he was a vice president at the American Enterprise Institute, a vice president at the Manhattan Institute, and president of the Commonwealth Foundation.
He has also been a lawyer at the firm currently known as Dechert, a clerk for the Honorable Judge Danny J. Boggs on the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, a staffer for the California Assembly Republican Caucus, and an associate at the political consulting firm of Hoffenblum-Mollrich.
Olsen graduated with a B.A. in political science from Claremont McKenna College, and received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
Olsen is the proud father of two children, a twelve-year old son who likes Vivaldi and a sixteen-year old daughter who likes Eminem. He passionately supports the New York Yankees and Tottenham Hotspur.
Henry and I will have a conversation about his new book which is debuting TODAY, The Working Class Republican: Ronald Reagan and the Return of Blue-Collar Conservatism, and how how Trump can build Reagan’s lasting, working-class coalition.
Reagan developed a unique conservative philosophy that accepted rather than opposed the New Deal's basic promise: that government should help Americans earn comfort, dignity, and respect -- provided they work to the best of their ability.

June 20, 2017 07:58 PM PDT
[yendifplayer type=audio mp3=http://s2.radioboss.fm:8424/stream]
Lawrence W. Schonbrun is the executive director of Class Action Watch, a nonprofit organization and is a s a nationally recognized authority on the issue of the reasonableness of attorneys' fee awards in class actions.
He has appeared on behalf of unnamed class members in approximately 150 class actions throughout the United States.
A New York City native now living in Northern California, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont in 1966 and his law degree from Boston College Law School in 1969.
Mr. Schonbrun has been featured on John Stossel's ABC special, "The Trouble With Lawyers," as well as Morley Safer's 60 Minutes report, "The Disaster That Wasn't."
He has also testified before the United States Congress on the issue of attorney contingency fees and before the California Senate Judiciary Committee on class action reform legislation.
Lawrence W. Schonbrun's work in the field of class actions has been chronicled in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Forbes, The Washington Post, Barron's, BusinessWeek, Bloomberg Business News Service, and American Thinker.
Mr. Schonbrun also hosts the popular weekly radio show "Lies, Lawyers & Liberalism with Larry the Lawyer" every Saturday at 5:30 PM on San Francisco's KNEW 910AM.
Lawrence and I will discuss the threat posed by an increasingly unaccountable judiciary that is undermining the rule of law across our nation.
The California Supreme Court—a national trendsetter—has granted review to the Hernandez v. Restoration Hardware, Inc. (RHI) case. Lawrence Schonbrun, who is an attorney in the case, contends that it is a court of appeal opinion so full of errors, both factual and legal, as to make one wonder if our legal system is losing its commitment to the rule of law itself. If rulings like this can be issued by the second-highest court in California—a highly influential legal arena—then we could be witnessing a phenomenon that will soon sweep the nation.
Don't miss this conversation -- the judiciary in America has been loaded with "Living Constitution" adherents and we're reaping the consequences.

N. Scott Jones brings 25 years of experience in business, politics and the media to his role as host of Pissed Off, Politically Speaking.

June 06, 2017 07:41 PM PDT
My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* will be Timothy Shea.
Tim SheaTimothy Shea has been active in GOP politics deep behind enemy lines in the Northeast for over 40 years.
He has served as a Town Meeting Member, Town GOP Committee Member, and state convention delegate in Massachusetts.
The former host of Radio RedNationRising, he is a political commentator and essayist.
Timothy and I will be talking about the National Popular Vote. There is a big push right now amongst disgruntled folks to ditch the Electoral College and pass a NPV bill.
Why is that a bad thing? How would a popular vote affect the balance of power in America? Why didn't the Founders establish a national popular vote? Why a constitutional republic?
Timothy Shea will break it all down for us and make it clear, such that all of us can defend constitutional faithfulness and our electoral process.
Timothy is a favorite of mine and my top-shelf listeners, and, per usual, this will be fast-paced and too much fun to be legal!
My second guest tonight will be Senator Mike Lee.
Elected in 2010 as Utah's 16th Senator, Mike Lee has spent his career defending the basic liberties of Americans and Utahns as a tireless advocate for our founding constitutional principles.
Senator Lee acquired a deep respect for the Constitution early on. His father, Rex Lee, who served as the Solicitor General under President Ronald Reagan, would often discuss varied aspects of judicial and constitutional doctrine around the kitchen table, from Due Process to the uses of Executive Plenary Power. He attended most of his father's arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court, giving him a unique, hands-on experience and understanding of government up close.
Lee graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science, graduated from BYU's Law School in 1997. He served as law clerk to Judge Dee Benson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, and then with future Supreme Court Justice Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
Lee spent several years as an attorney with the law firm Sidley & Austin specializing in appellate and Supreme Court litigation, and then served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Salt Lake City arguing cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
Lee served the state of Utah as Governor Jon Huntsman's General Counsel and was later honored to reunite with Justice Alito, now on the Supreme Court, for a one-year clerkship. He returned to private practice in 2007.
Today, Lee fights to preserve America's proud founding document in the United States Senate. He advocates efforts to support constitutionally limited government, fiscal responsibility, individual liberty, and economic prosperity.
Lee is a member of the Judiciary Committee, and serves as Chairman of the Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights Subcommittee protecting business competition and personal freedom.
Senator Lee has a new book out that is must reading for, well, every American, titled, Written Out of History: The Forgotten Founders Who Fought Big Government.
Senator Mike Lee and I, in light of upcoming Father's Day, will discuss the impact his dad had on his life and worldview. We'll talk about the Gorsuch hearings and the acrimony present in those judicial hearings.
And of course we'll discuss his terrific new book and a few of the people he highlights in the book -- such as Aaron Burr, Mercy Otis Warren, Iroquois Chief Canasatego -- and the contributions they made to the U.S Constitution and founding.

Steven L. Hays / ADF VP Kristen K. Waggoner - The Tami Jackson Show - 5/23
May 23, 2017 07:53 PM PDT
My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Steven L. Hays.
Steven L. Hayes graduated with honors from the University of Arkansas and the University of San Francisco Law School.
As a self-described “recovering” tax attorney he spent considerable time and resources investigating alternatives to the income tax. Based on his research, including interviewing tax practitioners, business owners, employees and economists, he determined the best solution was to eliminate the income tax and the IRS and replace them with a national retail sales tax collected by the states.
In 1990, Mr. Hayes joined and became President of Citizens For An Alternative Tax System (CATS), a non-profit 501(c)(4) lobbying organization, which was the first organization dedicated to the idea of replacing the federal income tax with a national sales tax.
He was also instrumental in forming the Florida FairTax® Educational Association, Inc., (FFETA) and currently serves on the FFETA board of directors.
Hayes has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows, had numerous articles published in newspapers and magazines, and regularly speaks to groups of citizens around the country about why we must eliminate the income tax and the IRS and replace them with a national retail sales tax.
Steve is the Chairman and President at FairTax.org and we'll discuss all that is going on with Trump/Congress’ pending tax reforms in the budget, tax reform/cut package of legislation and AHCA legislation.
Will these reforms take hold or will the media/Democrat Party thwart any and all efforts in Congress and the Executive to push forward the President’s legislative agenda with the current controversy regarding Russia?
Don't miss this conversation with the "rest of the story" vis-à-vis "the Fair Tax."
My second guest will be ADF VP Kristen K. Waggoner.
Kristen K. Waggoner serves as senior vice president of US legal advocacy, general counsel – Arizona, with Alliance Defending Freedom. In this role, Waggoner supervises a team of more than 50 attorneys and legal staff who specialize in constitutional law and focus on religious freedom, sanctity of life, and marriage and family. Waggoner joined Alliance Defending Freedom in 2013.
Waggoner has extensive experience in civil litigation, employment, education, nonprofit, and constitutional law. After clerking with Washington Supreme Court Justice Richard B. Sanders and interning with U.S. Representative Linda Smith, Waggoner joined Ellis, Li & McKinstry, a Seattle law firm, where she became a partner in 2004. At ELM, Waggoner participated as counsel in hundreds of legal matters including constitutional cases such as Andersen v. King County (same-sex marriage), Stormans v. Wiesman (pharmacists’ conscience rights), State v. Arlene’s Flowers (floral designer’s right not to participate in same-sex marriage), State ex rel Gallwey v. Grimm (financial aid to religious university students), and State v. Hamlin (clergy-penitent privilege). Waggoner’s clients primarily included private schools and universities, churches, denominations, and other nonprofit organizations, and she served on the firm’s management, compensation, pro bono, and hiring committees.
Waggoner is Peer Review Rated AV® Preeminent™ in Martindale-Hubbell. Washington Law & Politics selected her as a “Rising Star” for many years and she is a sought-after national speaker on legal and cultural issues. She has made numerous media appearances including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Times, the Seattle Times, BBC News, CNN, CBS Sunday Morning, and ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, as well as appearances on Fox News and other networks.
Since 2000, Waggoner has served as an adjunct faculty member at Northwest University at the undergraduate and master’s levels. She is currently a member of Northwest University’s board of trustees.
Waggoner earned her J.D. from Regent University School of Law, graduating cum laude. Waggoner also served as the internal managing editor for the Regent Law Review. She earned her BA from Northwest University. Waggoner is admitted to practice in Washington, Oregon, Arizona, and Florida, and is admitted to many federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
Kristen and I will cover a number of cases including Don Vander Boon/West Michigan Beef Company v. the USDA, Cal State–San Marcos gives $300,000 to Gender Equity and LGBTQA Centers, $0 to Students for Life, Kentucky appeals court upholds victory for printer, deals blow to govt coercion and more!
This will be a great conversation with one of America's foremost religious liberty litigators!

May 16, 2017 07:16 PM PDT
My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Gregg Keller.
Gregg Keller is the Treasurer of Citizens Against Corporate Bailouts (CACB).
Gregg Keller is widely regarded as one of the preeminent public affairs professionals in the country. Before founding Atlas Strategy Group, Keller helped lead two national public policy organizations, directed a national coalitions program for a presidential campaign and managed a nationally-watched U.S. Senate campaign.
Previously, Keller served as the National Executive Director of the Faith & Freedom Coalition (FFC). Founded by Ralph Reed, FFC is one of the country’s largest social conservative public policy organizations, with more than 700,000 members and affiliates in 30 states.
In 2010 FFC helped turnout the largest electoral participation by social conservative voters ever seen in a non-Presidential election. Under Keller’s leadership, FFC executed 58.8 million voter contacts to social conservative households in 2010, educating and turning out their voters in 24 states and 111 races.
A Missouri native, Gregg married his high school sweetheart, Lorie, his wife of 15 years. They have three children: Bobby, Eleanor and Elizabeth.
Citizens Against Corporate Bailouts (CACB) is a coalition of New Yorkers who have united to fight back against Governor Cuomo's so-called 'Clean Energy Standard' mandate - a massive tax hike that went into effect on April 1st, 2017. This brand new tax increase of $7.6 billion will be hidden on our electric bills, making us pay more to keep the lights on.
Even worse, it will be used to bailout upstate nuclear plants owned by Exelon, a big Chicago corporation, that is already making billions of dollars a year in profits. The profits are so large, that Exelon’s CEO’s salary was nearly $16 million last year.
CACB believes it is wrong for our hard earned money to be sent back to Chicago to line the pockets of a CEO. Even Exelon shareholders believe their CEO is paid too much.
New Yorkers already have some of the highest electricity bills in the country. And thanks to Governor Cuomo’s hidden tax, your bill just got higher.
Governor Cuomo is standing up for wealthy billionaires in Chicago. CACB is standing up for YOU.
Gregg and I will discuss the CACB new campaign against Cuomo’s nuclear bailout that will have national implications—becoming a model in other states across America.
In Gregg's words:
Governor Cuomo’s $8 Billion energy tax hike to prop up failing upstate nuclear plants is the largest middle class tax increase in decades….New York Senate Republicans have done nothing to stop this disastrous tax and it’s past time for them to stand up and fight it. CACB’s significant television ad buy targeting New York City, Long Island, and Albany will ensure that citizens demand action from Senators Joseph Griffo, John Flanagan, Elaine Phillips, and Carl Marcellino on this crucial issue.
My second guest tonight will be pundit, Timothy Shea.
Timothy and I will be talking about the the latest political topics: of course President Trump, the firing of Comey and Mainstream Media's devolution from lunacy to an outright coup.
And more! Timothy is a favorite of mine and my top-shelf listeners, and this will be fun!
